Outdoor Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring cleaning isn’t just for inside the house. The exterior of your home, like the driveway, patio and fences also needs tidying up.

Spring has almost sprung, which means that warmer days, blooming flowers, and singing birds are just around the corner. It also means that the mess left behind by winter are on full display, and that mud, leaves, and other debris have turned the exterior of your home into a bit of a mess.  So, as you get started on spring cleaning, don’t forget to attend to the outside of your house too. Here is a checklist to insure your home exterior is in tip top shape.

1. Gutter Cleaning

With spring showers ahead, you want your gutters clear and ready to handle the water runoff. Winter storms knock leaves, branches, and debris into gutters. If you are brave enough to tackle this yourself –  put on your work gloves, get a  ladder (always make sure you have a second person manning the ladder), scrape out as much debris as you can, and then hose away the rest. While you’re at it, clear clogs from the downspouts, and make sure they direct water well away from the foundation.

This is a tricky and dangerous job so if you are in any way inexperienceed with a ladder please leave this job to the professionals.

2. Fence Cleaning

Spruce up your fence by raking leaves and other debris away from the base and then hosing or scrubbing off any mud. Touch up wooden fences as needed with fresh paint or varnish.

3. Window Cleaning

Clean Windows are a must for a neat and clean looking exterior. You can hire a professional to clean the outside of your windows, or you can tackle the job yourself. Close all your windows and use a garden hose to spray the outside. You’ll remove the first layer of dirt and make the rest of the process a lot easier. sing a new clean and dry cloth clean the indoor glass panes with a window cleaner or some vinegar and water. Use a spray bottle and spray an even and light layer over the entire window, using your clean cloth (lint free, for best results) – them wipe horizontally and vertically to ensure a streak free result. 4. Exterior Wall Cleaning

Your home’s exterior walls keep you warm and safe. During the winter months they get splashed and stained with mud, especially near ground level. An afternoon with a power washer, or even a hose with a jet attachment, will make quick work of the grime and tidy up the outside of your home.

5. BBQ Cleaning

Even if you wiped down the BBQ before putting it away for the winter last year, it’s important to start each new BBQ season with a thorough cleaning.

6. Garden Beds

Spring is a great time to clean up your garden beds. Rake out leaves, pull last year’s dead annuals, and trim back spent perennials. Spring is also the time to prune summer-blooming trees and shrubs.  Most evergreens are also ready for a trimming by early spring. And, of course, remove broken or diseased branches from any type of greenery. Removing all debris and trimming branches and shrubs will make a huge difference to the appearance of your garden.

7. Driveway & Patio Cleaning

Blast away mud, water, stains, algae, and general grunge from your driveway, patios  and walkways with a power washer or hose with a jet attachment. Use a stiff broom to push stray gravel back onto gravel paths or driveways, and if necessary, refill the spaces between bricks or pavers with fresh sand, grout, or gravel.  Check out our great article on Power Washing Do’s & Dont’s here

8. Grass & Lawn Areas

It’s probably been months since you seen the entirity of  your green grass. Rake away old leaves and debris from the Autumn/ Winter months and get ready for a season of growth. February is still too early to seed, March and April are a great time to remove winter debris and apply spring fertiliser.
